Just 10 kilometers southeast of Shëngjin, the city of Lezhë holds one of the most historically significant and emotionally resonant sites in all of Albania: the Lezhë Castle and the Mausoleum of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg — the 15th-century Albanian national hero who is worshipped throughout the country as the symbol of Albanian resistance, identity, and freedom.
Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg (1405–1468) is to Albanians what William Wallace is to Scots or Joan of Arc is to the French — a warrior, a symbol, and a near-mythological figure. Son of an Albanian noble, taken to the Ottoman court as a hostage, trained as an elite Ottoman military officer, and then — at the age of 38 — defecting back to Albania and rallying the Albanian princes against the Ottoman Empire in an extraordinary 25-year military campaign that kept Albania free long after the rest of the Balkans had fallen.
