About the event
Sazan Island is one of the most intriguing destinations in Albania — and given how recently it was opened to the public, one of the very few places in Europe where you can still feel like a genuine explorer. Albania's largest island (covering approximately 5.7 square kilometers), Sazan was a classified military zone under the communist Hoxha regime and completely inaccessible to civilians, including Albanian citizens, from 1945 until as recently as 2017. What you find when you land there is a ghost world: a fully equipped naval and military base, housing, bunkers, tunnels, command centers, and submarine docks — all abandoned and slowly being reclaimed by Mediterranean scrub.
Your tour departs Vlorë by speedboat (approximately 20 minutes across the Bay of Vlorë) and lands at Sazan's small dock. Your licensed guide — essential as independent entry is currently managed carefully — leads you through the maze of Cold War…
